A crowd is defined by its reason, the reason for which the crowd gathers. But if we strip the crowd from its reason, we can have a deeper look into its composition, the many characters when gathered together, forms a crowd.
Dev-dipavali is one of the biggest festivals in one of the oldest city of the world, Varanasi. This year, according to official record, more than 5 million people gathered in this ancient city to witness the festivities in a single night alone. Needless to say, the presence of celebrities and politicians facilitated this gathering even more.
Though it is a beautiful festival, my aim was not to document the festival, but to separate the festival from the crowd and find some distinct elements that actually composed such a massive gathering. This series is an effort to look deeper into this socio-cultural phenomenon.
